Sink Cave
Access No Access allowed by Gareg Fawr Farm as at 1983 From the main sink on the Mellte on the Pont Rhyd-rhiwllan Bridge, proceed up the East bank along the river terrace for about 550m to a point where a boundary fence 155m South of the Nant Careg-Fawr Stream enters the Mellte. The cave entrance is about 8m from the river edge and 2m above it.
Description The entrance lies under the foot of a large oak tree and is about 0.5m square and faces the river. Water sinks in the river bed and Eastern bank of the River Mellte, not far from the limestone boundary. The entrance is usually covered with a rock slab, put there by the farmer. It leads to a low chamber with a 2m drop. The floor is silted and no way on can be followed for any distance. Water from the river bank sink obviously enters the chamber and sinks in the floor. There are signs of other blocked entrances in the vicinity.
