Representing underground exploration across Wales, The Forest of Dean and The Marches

Caving Wales is the national association for caving in Wales, the Forest of Dean and the Marches for individual cavers, caving clubs and similar organisations. It represents regional and wider caving interests within the United Kingdom through the British Caving Association whilst maintaining its position as an independent body. Caving Wales is recognised and supported by Sport Wales as the representative body for caving in Wales. Caving Wales also represents mine explorers and mine history organisations. Many cavers share an interest in heritage mines and the industrial archaeology of Wales, and caving is often another interest of mine explorers. Geology takes no account of national borders. So the area covered by Caving Wales take in parts of England that border on Wales where the rocks found on both sides of the border are effectively parts of the same structural group.

That has been achieved and hence landowner permission for cave digging has expired. Any further digging at the caves would require new landowner permission. What remains is landowner permission for access on foot to the caves by bona fide cavers. That is the only permission. The caves are located within woodland that is part of Gilwern Hill SSSI. There is no permission to do anything other than walk directly to the caves. The habitat within the SSSI is legally protected and any action other than accessing the caves on foot would require specific permission from the landowners and NRW.
